On May 24, 2017, the government introduced Bill 17: Fair and Family-friendly Workplaces Act, which makes amendments to the Employment Standards Code and theLabour Relations Code. Alberta’s labour and employment legislation was severely out dated and lagging behind standards found in the rest of Canada and as set by the courts. Bill 17 makes moderate changes to bring our legislation and standards closer to mainstream and to alleviate some of the heavy imbalance of power and rights that currently exists in favour of employers.
The following is a summary of major changes to the Labour Relations Code. Staff continue to review and analyze the legislation. Unless otherwise noted, all these changes will take effect when the bill comes into force. A bill must pass three readings and receive royal assent from the Lieutenant Governor to come into force.
