Local 54 Education Bursary

This bursary was set up at the May 2012 Local 54 Annual General Meeting to raise awareness of the Labour Movement. The Essay topic is chosen annually by AUPE Local 54 Council. There are 12 bursaries of $1000 each available.

Eligibility:

Available for post-secondary student enrolled in full-time or part-time studies within the Province of Alberta. Members in good standing of AUPE Local 54 with one full year service (holding a FT or PT FTE) as of July 30 of current year are eligible, and/or their spouse, and/or their financial dependents. Eligible dependents must be under the age of 25 years.

Essay Topic:

Submission of a 2,000-2,500 word essay (minimum - maximum) on the one of the two (2) topics listed:

  • With the introduction of Bill 17 (The Fair and Family Friendly Workplaces Act) what possible impact, positive or negative, could this have on the labour movement?
  • Describe the role that AUPE played in the labour dispute between employer and the employees of Points West Living Cold Lake. 

The Local will award up to twelve (12) $1000 bursaries annually. Every application that is submitted will be reviewed by the Education Bursary Committee and an independent reviewer.

The committee is comprised of the following members: Cindy Bill, Monica Sisodia, Calia Muir, Jessica Blais and Donna Paliwoda.

The completed original application will be accepted from June 30 to July 28, 2017 for studies commencing after the submission deadline.
